Prior to assessing the cyclist on the bike, I conduct a series of tests to determine their range of motion, muscle asymmetry, and muscle imbalances. After the assessment session, I prescribe specific yoga stretches, physical therapy exercises and core strengthening exercises to address the identified problem areas. The following are some of the assessments I conduct:

The rider position analysis is a scientific approach to biomechanical positioning and pedaling technique. I use "state of the art technology" Retul 3-D and Video Analysis Software to evaluate your current position on the bike (a pre-test).

Then I make the changes on the bike and conduct a post-test to compare your riding position. After the post-test, I ride with my clients for 2 to 3 hours to make any minor adjustments.

Prior to the positioning, I have you fill out a questionnaire. Questions start with age, experience level, current training focus, type of cycling, goals, old injuries, degree of stretching and type of strength training. I also assess your range of motion and muscle balance.
Utilizing the information gained above, I make adjustments to the seat height, angle, and fore/aft placement. Adjustment of cleats and placement of shims are also incorporated, if needed. Lastly, the cockpit area is addressed (stem length, height, and brake hoods are also adjusted).
The most important finding from my assessments is most clients do not perform enough stretching and have a poor bike fit. This causes many problems regarding performance, comfort, and longevity on the bike for later years.
For more information about body alignment and assymetry, please read the article I wrote on the front page of this site. As well, for more detailed information click on the "Body Alignment Info" tab on the front page as well.
After conducting the tests on and off the bike, I prescribe specific stretches, yoga exercises, core training, and strength training.
After the session you will note improved riding efficiency and performance. Specifically, you will find your power level is dramatically improved at little or no heart rate expense. I normally see an average increase in power output of 30 watts on most clients. However, I have seen as much as 80 watts increased at the same effort after the new position.
