Dr. Combs is passionate about bike fitting and assessment. Greg takes a holistic approach to bike fitting as a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) specialist, certified yoga instructor and researcher of methods to assess and correct repetitive strain injuries, pelvic asymmetry and muscle imbalances. He is on the technical advisory board for John Howard Performance Sports (JHPS) and is JHPS Power FiTTE and Body FiTTE Certified. He has over 30 years experience in training, competing, and coaching cycling and other endurance events.
Combs served in the United States Army for 12 years. During this timeframe, Dr. Combs competed and coached fellow Rangers in the Best Ranger Competition in 1985 and 1986. The Best Ranger Competition is a grueling three-day event that is more difficult than the highly publicized Eco-Challenge. To better prepare for the Best Ranger Competition, Greg competed in numerous half ironman triathlon events as well as racing in USCF races.
As a Category 1 USCF Racer, Greg represented the United States Army in the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia and numerous international events throughout Europe. Dr. Combs' Team earned the Bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympic Trials in the 4km Team Pursuit. Greg has also worked extensively with athletes with physical challenges. He competed with (as a pilot on a tandem) and mentored visually impaired athletes for the 1996 Summer Paralympics.
As an USA Cycling Elite Coach, Dr. Combs has worked with numerous athletes and as many as 31 of Combs’ clients have achieved elite status. Greg has also worked with fellow coaches and former Olympians in conducting bike fitting workshops and cycling clinics. While Greg was completing his doctoral studies at the University of Northern Colorado, he founded and coached the first collegiate cycling club at UNC. Through his guidance and inspiration, Greg was able to help this start up club qualify for the Collegiate Cycling Championships within its first season. Dr. Combs was also instrumental in enabling Handcycling to become recognized as a cycling category within U.S.C.F. In 1998, Dr. Combs was the Head Coach for the U.S. Handcycling Team at the World Paralympic Cycling Championships at Colorado Springs.
Dr. Combs has also published numerous articles for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sport Management Journals, and cycling publications regarding equipment fit, safety, aerodynamics, training, and fund raising. He also writes weekly cycling articles for "The Pilot" newspaper and monthly articles for Endurance Magazine.
As president of Velo Smart Bicycle Ranch, Greg is a proud sponsor of the Cross Creek Cycling Club and Full Spectrum Racing in Fayetteville, NC and many of the events within North Carolina Triathlon Series hosted by Set Up Events. He is also a proud member of the Sand Spurs Triathlon Club in Pinehurst, NC.
After finding renewed passion for competing in triathlons Greg can be seen at many of the North Carolina Triathlon Series events.
